The Solar System consists of the Sun and all the objects that orbit it under the influence of gravity. It formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago from the collapse of a giant cloud of gas and dust known as the solar nebula. The Sun contains almost all of the Solar System's mass, while the remaining material forms planets, moons, asteroids, comets and countless smaller bodies.
The Solar System lies within the Milky Way Galaxy and orbits the galactic centre approximately once every 230 million years.

The Sun is a G-type main-sequence star (G2V) and is the centre of the Solar System. Its immense gravity keeps the planets and other objects in orbit. Energy is produced in its core through nuclear fusion, where hydrogen is converted into helium, releasing enormous amounts of heat and light.
